Olight Warrior Mini 3 – compact EDC light

The Olight Warrior Mini 3 brings the control concept of the Warrior range – metal side switch plus tactical tail switch – down to 111 mm in length and 122 g. Up to 1,750 lumens, 240 m beam distance and an 18650 battery with 3,500 mAh make it the EDC torch for trouser pocket, hunting rucksack and glove box. Compared with the Warrior Mini 2, Olight has increased the beam distance from 220 to 240 m, enlarged the side switch and built in a pre-activated proximity sensor that protects the torch in your pocket.

Format and light output

23 mm in diameter over the entire length – head and body are equally thick – and 111 mm: the Warrior Mini 3 is hardly bigger than a marker pen and weighs 122 g with clip and battery. The aluminium housing is waterproof to IPX8 and designed for drops from 1.5 m. The tail switch is made using nano-injection technology, which according to Olight makes it easier to remove metal dust.

The cool white high-performance LED (5,700–6,700 K, CRI 70) sits behind a TIR lens; 14,400 candela give 240 m beam distance according to FL1 – a lot for this size, because the lens forms a defined spot. Turbo delivers 1,750 lumens for 2 minutes, then drops to 500 lumens (210 minutes) and 200 lumens (30 minutes); Medium with 120 lumens runs for 18 hours. According to Olight, Moonlight with 0.5 lumens lasts 100 days – enough for an emergency light that sits in the vehicle for months.

Side switch, tail cap, sensor

The metal side switch switches on and off, changes levels when held, starts in Moonlight with a long press, in Turbo with a double click and in Strobe (13 Hz) with a triple click; holding longer in the off state locks the torch. The tail cap has two configurations: in factory mode (configuration 1), pressing and holding gives Turbo as momentary light, in configuration 2 Strobe.

The pre-activated proximity sensor only intervenes if you switch the torch on in High or Turbo with the lens covered, or if the lens is covered within half a second afterwards. It then steps down to Medium and stays there – a double click on the side switch within 5 seconds brings back High or Turbo. If, on the other hand, you approach an object such as window glass or raindrops while High mode is running, the sensor does not step down according to Olight.

Battery and charging

The customised 18650 battery (ORB-186C35) with 3,500 mAh at 3.6 V (12.6 Wh) is charged in the torch: the supplied magnetic MCC charging cable (5 V/2 A) docks onto the tail cap and, according to the manual, fills the battery in about 3.5 hours. The indicator in the side switch shows the charge status: green above 60 %, orange 10 to 60 %, red 5 to 10 %, flashing red below 5 %. An L-shaped mount (L-stand) is also included.

Warrior Mini 3 or Warrior 3S?

The Olight Warrior 3S is the big sister: 2,300 lumens, 23,000 candela, 300 m, 5,000 mAh 21700 battery, 139 mm, 176 g and holster – the torch for the high seat and duty. The Warrior Mini 3 gives up 60 m of range and a good third of the beam intensity, weighs 54 g less and disappears into any trouser pocket. If you mainly want range from a small format, compare the Olight Baton Turbo: 1,000 lumens, but 510 m at 81.7 mm and 91 g, without tail switch, with 18350 battery.

Frequently asked questions about the Warrior Mini 3

What has changed compared with the Warrior Mini 2?

Olight calls the Mini 3 an improved version of the Mini 2: 240 instead of 220 m beam distance, an enlarged metal side switch, the new pre-activated proximity sensor and the tail switch made using nano-injection technology. Olight does not provide any further comparison figures.

Why does the torch stay on Medium after dimming automatically?

This is by design: after a sensor-triggered downshift, the torch holds Medium according to the manual, even when the obstacle has been removed. A double click on the side switch within 5 seconds brings it back to High or Turbo.

The proximity sensor keeps triggering – is there a reset?

Yes, Olight describes a repair mode: switch the torch off, charge it fully and leave it on the MCC cable, point the head towards the ceiling with 2 m of clearance. Hold the side switch for 5 seconds until Moonlight lights up, switch off, activate Moonlight again and press three times within 5 seconds. The torch increases its brightness for 15 seconds and switches off.

Can I use the charging cable from my other Olight torch?

Olight describes the Warrior Mini 3 as compatible with the classic magnetic Olight charging cable; depending on the country, the product pages say MCC, MCC1 or MCC3, and the manual specifies 5 V/2 A input and 2 A charging current. The supplied cable fits in any case.

How long does one charge last?

In Medium with 120 lumens – usually enough for paths and close range – 18 hours, in High with 500 lumens 215 minutes, in Low with 15 lumens 165 hours. Turbo is limited to 2 minutes of full output; the battery is recharged in about 3.5 hours.

Is the torch safe in a trouser pocket?

Three safeguards: the lockout via the side switch, the proximity sensor, which steps down to Medium if switched on while covered, and the tail cap, which in configuration 1 only delivers Turbo while the switch is held. Mechanically: IPX8 and 1.5 m drop height.
