Olight i3T 2 EOS – Slim EDC Torch

The Olight i3T 2 EOS is the second generation of the slim AAA torch in Zippo format: 89 mm long, 15 mm thin, 41.8 g light. With the supplied alkaline battery it delivers up to 200 lumens and 62 m beam distance, with a 10440 lithium-ion battery 300 lumens and 80 m. Not a long-range thrower, but the torch you have with you anyway – on the keyring, in your jacket, on the peak of your cap.

Construction, clip and intended use

The aluminium alloy body is 15 mm thin from head to tail cap; Olight lists the torch in the EOS series and describes the form factor as car-key or Zippo size. It is waterproof to IPX8, impact resistant to 1.5 m according to the manual and rated for 0 to 40 °C. Olight specifies a Philips LUXEON TX LED in cool white with 5,700–6,700 K and CRI 70 as the light source; according to ANSI/PLATO FL1, 963 cd gives the 62 m with an alkaline battery. Its territory is close range: finding a lock, lighting up an engine bay, adjusting a dog harness, the walk to the car.

On the second generation, the two-way clip is clamped between tail cap and body rather than slipped on – it no longer comes loose unnoticed and lets the torch sit deep in your pocket. On the peak of a cap it becomes a hands-free head torch. Two spare O-rings are included so that the tail cap stays sealed even after many battery changes.

Light and operation

Two levels are enough: Low with 5 lumens for reading light and dark-adapted eyes, High with 200 lumens (alkaline) or 300 lumens (10440). Pressing firmly until it clicks switches constant-on or off, a light tap gives momentary light that goes out when released; you change the level by pressing firmly twice while on, or by tapping and then pressing firmly while off.

New compared to the first i3T is the selectable start level: with the torch off, tap five times briefly (no more than one second apart) and hold on the fifth – the current level lights up for one second and switches to the new default level; alternatively, press firmly nine times. This way the torch starts either gently at 5 lumens or immediately at full output. According to Olight, the second generation also offers 31 % more runtime, 71 % more in the high level, and stays below 45 °C at the surface.

Power and runtime

The i3T 2 runs on a 1.5 V AAA alkaline battery (one is included) or a 10440 lithium-ion battery with protection circuit (PCB) and a maximum length of 44 mm; the manual also lists AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries. The torch has no charging function – you charge 10440 cells externally, and Olight does not offer them in its own shop.

With alkaline, the high level runs for 7 minutes at 200 lumens and then steps down to 100 lumens for a further 28 minutes; the low level runs for 21 hours. With a 10440 it is 7 minutes at 300 lumens plus 38 minutes at 150 lumens, and 22.5 hours at 5 lumens. Battery change: unscrew the tail cap, insert the cell with the positive terminal towards the head, screw it back on; remove the insulating film before first use.

i3T 2 EOS or Baton Turbo?

The Olight Baton Turbo plays in a different league: 1,000 lumens, 510 m, replaceable 18350 battery with magnetic charging, 91 g – the torch you deliberately take along, for example to check the hunting ground. The i3T 2 EOS is the one that is with you anyway: keyring, glove box, jacket pocket – and it runs on any AAA battery from the supermarket when the big torch’s battery is empty. Yes, but only with a 10440 lithium-ion battery: 300 lumens for 7 minutes, then 150 lumens for 38 minutes, 80 m beam distance. With the supplied AAA alkaline it is 200 lumens and 62 m – this is the value Olight quotes as maximum output.

Which 10440 battery do I need, and where do I get it?

A standard commercially available 10440 with protection circuit (PCB) and a maximum length of 44 mm. Olight does not sell it in its own shop; it is charged externally, as the torch has no charging port.

Can the torch always start in the low level?

Yes: with the torch off, tap five times briefly and hold on the fifth, or press firmly nine times. The current level lights up for one second and then switches to the new start level.

How does the momentary light work?

Just tap the tail switch lightly, without clicking: the torch shines as long as you press and goes out when released – for a quick look at a lock, map or track.
