The Olight Valkyrie Turbo in Desert Tan is a pistol light with an LEP light source (Laser Excited Phosphor). 250 lumens sounds modest, but 70,225 candela and a 530-metre beam distance make it, according to Olight’s series comparison, the longest-reaching model in the Valkyrie range. Two CR123A provide up to 184 minutes of light, and the quick-release mount with swing arm holds on Glock and Picatinny rails. It is intended for anyone who wants to positively identify distant targets rather than light up a room.

What LEP means here

In an LEP source, according to Olight, a blue laser beam passes through a focusing lens and strikes a phosphor layer; the phosphor converts it into intense white light. The result is an extremely tight spot with hardly any stray light – which is why 250 lumens and 70,225 candela go together. Compared with the PL-3R at 10,200 candela, the spot at the same distance is almost seven times as bright, but there is no spill light next to the target.

On safety, Olight states in the manual, in its original wording: laser source “Max Output: ≤0.35mW@455nm Wavelength”, “Complies with IEC 60825-1:2014 Class 1 and IEC 62471 Group 2” and “RISK GROUP 2 – CAUTION: Possibly hazardous optical radiation emitted from this product. Do not stare at operating lamp. May be harmful to the eyes.” In addition, Olight prohibits pointing the light at aircraft or vehicles and covering the lamp head during operation.

Operation and light behaviour

The rear switch is ambidextrous. Pressing once switches constant-on, pressing again switches off; holding gives momentary light. Strobe: press both sides at the same time, or hold one and tap the other; a single press ends it. There is no Low level. On runtime behaviour, Olight writes: at room temperature the light runs for 3.5 minutes at full output and then steps down to 60 lumens within half a minute – summarised in the data table as 4 + 180 minutes. According to the manual, the body can reach 50 °C or more during prolonged operation.

Batteries instead of a rechargeable pack

The Valkyrie Turbo runs on two CR123A lithium batteries (3 V, 1,600 mAh), which are already inside the unit; before first use, open the tail cap, remove the insulating film and observe the polarity markings. Olight explicitly rules out rechargeable RCR123A. The advantage over the rechargeable PL-3R: spare batteries can be stored and swapped in seconds in the field.

Mounting with swing arm

The clamp works with a swing arm and spring lock: open the arm, place the light so that the adapter sits in the rail slot, close the arm – one-handed and without tools. The Glock adapter “GL” is fitted at the factory; for Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913) you swap it for the supplied 1913 adapter, and two screws and an Allen key are included for this. At 90.1 × 36.6 × 33.7 mm and 133 g including batteries, the Turbo is slightly longer and heavier than the PL-3R.

Valkyrie Turbo or PL-3R Valkyrie?

The Olight PL-3R Valkyrie is the counterpart from the same series: 1,500 lumens at 10,200 candela and 205 m – flood light for close range, built-in battery with magnetic charging. The Valkyrie Turbo delivers one sixth of the output but almost seven times the beam intensity and more than twice the beam distance, though without a Low level and with batteries instead of a rechargeable pack. You should not confuse it with Olight’s later PL-Turbo Valkyrie (LED, 800 lm, 515 m, 66,300 cd), a different model. Light and target marking in one unit are offered by the Olight Baldr RL Mini and the Olight Baldr Pro R.

Frequently asked questions about the Olight Valkyrie Turbo

Is the Valkyrie Turbo the same as the PL-Turbo Valkyrie?

No. The Valkyrie Turbo is Olight’s LEP model with 250 lm, 70,225 cd and 530 m (June 2022). The PL-Turbo Valkyrie arrived in September 2023 with an LED, 800 lm, 66,300 cd and 515 m – a different model.

Why does a 250-lumen light have a 530-metre beam distance?

Because beam distance depends on beam intensity (candela), not on light output. The LEP source concentrates 250 lumens into a very small spot and thus achieves 70,225 cd.

Do I see a laser beam when I switch it on?

No, what emerges is white light; the blue laser excites a phosphor layer inside. Olight states: “Complies with IEC 60825-1:2014 Class 1”. Nevertheless: do not look into the lamp while it is operating.

Which batteries can I insert?

Two 3 V CR123A lithium batteries; Olight determined the runtimes with the supplied 1,600 mAh cells. According to the manual, rechargeable RCR123A are not compatible.

How do I change from the Glock to the Picatinny adapter?

Loosen the factory-fitted “GL” adapter with the supplied Allen key, insert the 1913 adapter and secure it with the two supplied screws.

What warranty does Olight state for the Valkyrie Turbo?

According to the manual: 30 days repair or replacement via the seller, 2 years via Olight – excluding wear, modifications, misuse, disassembly, negligence, accidents, improper maintenance and third-party repairs.
