If you have built up your pistol in FDE or sand colours, the Olight Baldr Pro R in Desert Tan gives you the matching light/laser module with no technical compromises: Olight lists the Tan variant under the same product as the black one. That means 1,350 lumens of white light with a 200 m beam distance, a green laser at 510–530 nm (max. 5 mW, Class 3R according to IEC 60825-1), a built-in 1,000 mAh battery with magnetic charging and a quick-release mount for Glock and Picatinny rails, all at 126 g.

Desert Tan as a feature

The colour only affects the aluminium alloy body. According to Olight, the electronics, LED, laser, battery and mounting are the same for Black and Desert Tan, as are the 95 × 36.6 × 34.1 mm, IPX4 and 1 m impact resistance. Tan is worthwhile if the frame, optic and holster are already in earth tones and a black module would stand out visually.

Operating logic: ring, double-click, strobe and lockout

You select the light source on the selector ring of the head: white light, white light plus green laser, or laser only. The two rear switches are equivalent – a short press switches constant-on or off, holding gives momentary light until released. In the white-light positions, a double-click toggles between 1,350 and 300 lumens; the level is memorised, and from the off state a double-click goes straight to High.

You start the strobe with both switches at the same time; a single click ends it. To lock, hold one switch for about half a second and then the other for about two seconds until the light goes out; when locked, every press is only acknowledged with around 100 lumens. Olight points out that the selector works magnetically and strong magnets nearby can interfere with it.

Power: what the 1,000 mAh battery delivers

The 3.6 V lithium-polymer battery is built in and charges via the MCC-1A magnetic cable in about 1.5 hours. In High, the LED delivers 1,350 lumens for 1.5 minutes, then 500 lumens for 38 to 40 minutes and finally 300 lumens for 10 to 13 minutes; in Low at 300 lumens, the battery lasts 85 minutes with the laser or 93 minutes without. Once the charge level drops to about half, a maximum of 500 lumens is available. According to Olight, the laser alone runs for up to 19 hours. The charging port also serves as the connection for the optional RPL-7 remote cable switch.

Baldr Pro R Tan or Baldr Pro R in black?

Technically there is no difference: the Baldr Pro R in black has the same LED, the same laser, battery and scope of delivery – decide purely by the colour scheme of your firearm. For subcompact or compact pistols, the Baldr Mini with 57 mm, 600 lumens and a green laser is the smaller option; with a red laser it is called the Baldr RL Mini.

Mounting and legal notice

For Glock rails, the “GL” adapter is already fitted; for Picatinny according to MIL-STD-1913, you release it and fit the 1913 adapter using the supplied screws. Then open the swing arm, position the adapter in the desired rail slot and close the arm. The laser is zeroed via two screws for elevation and windage using the H1.5 hex key. Olight warns against pointing the laser or white light at eyes, vehicles or aircraft. Before buying and using, observe the firearms regulations of your country.

Does the Tan version differ technically from the black one?

No. Olight offers Black and Desert Tan as colour options of the same product; performance data, battery, laser, dimensions, weight and scope of delivery are identical.

What happens to the brightness when the battery is half empty?

According to Olight, the maximum brightness drops to 500 lumens at around 50% remaining capacity. If the voltage is very low, only the Low level with 300 lumens can be activated. The indicator on the body lights up red when less than 10% remains.

How do I activate the strobe, and how do I switch it off again?

Press both rear switches at the same time and release – the strobe runs at 13 Hz at 1,350 lumens. A single click on either switch ends it.

How do I lock the light for transport or in the holster?

Only when switched off: hold one switch for about 0.5 seconds, then the other for about 2 seconds until the light goes out. To unlock: hold both switches for about 2 seconds until the white light or laser comes on.

Which adapter is fitted at the factory, and how do I change to Picatinny?

The Glock adapter “GL” is fitted. The Picatinny adapter (1913) is included and is attached in place of the GL adapter using the supplied screws and the hex key.

How warm does the Baldr Pro R get during operation?

Olight states that the surface can reach 50 °C or more during prolonged operation in the high level; the step-down from 1,350 to 500 lumens after 1.5 minutes limits the heating.
