The Olight Sphere is a spherical ambient light with a 60 mm diameter, 93 g and a maximum of 75 lumens that emits white, red and coloured light all around. A magnetic base holds it on steel surfaces, a button in the base cycles through seven light modes, and via Bluetooth and the Olight app you can access up to 20 lighting options, groups and timers. Olight offers two versions – Sphere with magnetic MCC-1A charging contact and Sphere C with USB-C socket; this shop product covers both.

Sphere or Sphere C: what distinguishes the versions?

Housing, dimensions, weight, battery, IP56, impact resistance, magnetic base, operation and app are identical. The differences:

Feature Sphere Sphere C
Charging port MCC-1A magnetic cable (included), approx. 2 h USB-C (cable not included)
White light 2,700 K, CRI 80 2,800 K, CRI 80
LEDs (white / colour) 69 × 0.5 W / 54 67 × 0.2 W / 41
Scope of delivery Light, MCC-1A cable, metal plate, manual Light, manual
Colours (Olight DE) Blue, Snowflake Red Blue, Starry Sky

Light, modes and operation on the device

The button sits in the magnetic base; according to the manual, the Sphere can also be operated on a hard surface by pressing from above. A press or double press switches on, a double press switches off, and each further press changes the mode: white → red → red flashing → four colour modes → white. Holding dims continuously; holding while off starts the low white level. A button lock (hold for 2 seconds while off, unlock 1 second) prevents switching on in the rucksack. When switching off, the indicator shows the charge level: green 50–100 %, yellow 10–49 %, red below 10 %.

For context: 75 lumens corresponds to a small bedside lamp, 1 lumen is an orientation light for the tent. The red light with 0.5 to 12 lumens disturbs dark adaptation less than white.

App control via Bluetooth

To pair, press quickly three or more times with the sphere switched on until it flashes green (3-minute window). In the Olight app you adjust brightness and modes, see the battery level, set timers and choose from up to 20 lighting options including music mode and the “Bash-A-Mole” game; groups combine up to 100 spheres. Range according to Olight 10 m, with several spheres no more than 13 cm apart; time-controlled scenes require the Olight Obounds gateway. Important: 30 minutes after switching off, the sphere enters a sleep mode and cannot be reached via the app – a button press or the charging cable wakes it. When locked, it also does not respond to the app.

Battery, charging and durability

Both versions have a built-in Li-ion battery with 3.7 V and 700 mAh (2.59 Wh); before first use it must be charged to activate it. The Sphere comes with the MCC-1A cable (USB-A 5 V/1 A, around 2 hours according to the manual). The Sphere C charges via USB-C; Olight recommends a power adapter of 5 W or more but does not quote a charging time. Operating temperature 0 to 40 °C. IP56 means dust-protected and resistant to water jets – rain yes, submersion no. Olight specifies a 1.5 m drop height but warns against using the polycarbonate sphere as a ball.

Frequently asked questions about the Olight Sphere and Sphere C

How do I tell whether I have a Sphere or a Sphere C?

By the charging port: magnetic contact in the base = Sphere, USB-C socket on the side = Sphere C. According to Olight, “Starry Sky” is only available as Sphere C, “Snowflake Red” only as Sphere.

Does the sphere also work without the app?

Yes. On/off, seven modes, dimming, direct start in white low and button lock all work via the button; the app adds colour programmes, timers, music mode, groups and battery level.

Why does the Sphere not respond to the app?

Usually it is in sleep mode (30 minutes after switching off) or locked – a button press or charging helps. Also: no more than 10 m to the smartphone, no large metal parts in between, at least 1.2 m from Wi-Fi transmitters.

How do I attach the sphere to wood, plastic or tent fabric?

The magnet needs steel. The Sphere comes with a self-adhesive metal plate; according to Olight, it is not included with the Sphere C.

Can I control Sphere and Sphere C together?

Olight specifies group control for up to 100 Spheres without restriction to one version. When pairing, Olight recommends fewer than five spheres at a time.

Is the Sphere suitable for children’s rooms and tents?

As a night light, yes: 1 lumen white runs for 40 hours, and IP56 and a 1.5 m drop height forgive everyday use. According to Olight, however, it is not a ball to throw and not a pet toy.
