The right riflescope for hunting and sport

Magnification follows the use case: 1–6x and 1–8x scopes with a wide field of view have proven themselves for driven hunts, 2.5–15x is the all-rounder for the high seat, and 5–25x serves long shots in the field or on the range. A large main tube (30 or 34 mm) brings more adjustment travel and light transmission.

First or second focal plane? In the first focal plane the reticle scales with magnification – holdover points stay true at every setting, ideal for ballistic reticles and long range. In the second focal plane the reticle stays constantly fine, covering less of the game at high magnification. Illuminated reticles (classic 4A with centre dot) are a must for dusk.

Frequently asked questions about riflescopes

Which magnification for driven hunts and the high seat?

Driven hunt: 1–6x or 1–8x with the widest possible field of view at 1x. High seat: 2.5–15x or 3–18x with an illuminated reticle for dusk. If one scope has to do both, choose 2–12x or 2.5–15x.

First or second focal plane – which is better?

For ballistic work with holdover points (long range, rapid dialling) the first focal plane, because subtensions stay true at any magnification. For classic hunting the second focal plane, because the reticle stays fine at high magnification and covers less of the game.

Does every scope fit my rifle?
